Transactional Analysis
What is Transactional Analysis?
Transactional Analysis (TA), founded by psychiatrist Dr. Eric Berne, is a therapeutic approach that explores how early experiences shape the patterns we use to relate to ourselves and others.
TA helps us understand the “scripts” we unconsciously follow: patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that developed in childhood and continue to influence our adult relationships, decision-making, and emotional responses.
TA is particularly attuned to how communication and relationships work. It examines the “transactions”, or exchanges, between people and supports individuals in developing more awareness, clarity, and agency in how they interact with the world.
People often find TA particularly useful when navigating:
Repetitive relationship conflicts or emotional patterns
Inner criticism, guilt, or long-standing beliefs from childhood
Difficulty asserting needs or maintaining boundaries
Confusion between different internal “voices” or reactions
Stress, anxiety, or reactive emotions
Perfectionism, people-pleasing, or feelings of “not being enough”
Workplace or interpersonal challenges
TA provides a structured yet gentle way of understanding why we respond the way we do, and how to respond differently.
How TA Works
TA offers a practical framework for understanding internal states and relational patterns. It is built around key concepts that help clients notice and shift long-held dynamics:
Ego States (Parent, Adult, Child)
TA explores three internal states:
Parent – learned messages, rules, and beliefs
Adult – present-focused, grounded, and balanced thinking
Child – feelings, creativity, needs, and early adaptations
Understanding which state we are operating from helps us respond more consciously instead of repeating old patterns.
Transactions
TA looks at the “transactions”, or exchanges, between people. Identifying whether these transactions are helpful, crossed, or repetitive offers insight into communication patterns that may be causing tension or misunderstandings.
Life Scripts
According to TA, each person forms an internal “life script” in childhood, i.e. a set of beliefs and expectations about themselves, others, and the world. TA helps individuals identify these scripts and develop new, more flexible ways of relating.
Through this increased awareness, clients can shift unhelpful relational patterns, strengthen their voice, and build more authentic and balanced connections.
Our Approach at The Therapy Collective
At The Therapy Collective, we integrate Transactional Analysis within a supportive, relational, and trauma-informed framework. Our TA work focuses on helping clients:
Understand the internal voices and patterns that shape their reactions;
Recognise and shift relational exchanges that create tension or misunderstanding;
Develop healthier boundaries and communication;
Become more aware of early scripts and how these influence adult life;
Strengthen the “Adult” state, a grounded place from which choices become clearer and more aligned;
Relate to themselves with greater compassion, understanding, and flexibility.
TA is collaborative and practical, offering clients clear language and tools to navigate both internal experiences and external relationships.
